TV Kids you grew up with
Dear moms/dads of the world,
Allow me to start today’s blog by confessing that I am a sap for nostalgia. Literally anything sparks off a memory. Recently, while spending time with my cousins, we ended up chatting about the cartoons that kids see today like Chota Bheem, Shin Chan, etc. That kind of made us realise there’s no show/sitcom or even cartoon like what used to be telecasted back when we were kids.
So here’s a little flashback of some of the children we grew up on, back in the nineties.
-
Vicki – The girl robot from the famous sitcom Small Wonder. This comedy sci-fi family show was everything every kid wanted to watch. It’s not every day that you get to see a little girl read a book in less than a minute, pick up a couch single-handedly to clean the house and other such miraculous acts.
-
Kevin McCallister – Mcaulay Culkin, the cute kid from the Home Alone series was a favourite with every child and parent. His super smart yet childish ways to always outsmart the bad guys was inspiring and funny.
-
Matilda – Roald Dahl’s 1988 book was turned into a movie in 1996 and was based on the life of Matilda, a seven year old girl who possesses the superpower of telekinesis. She valued education greatly and hated her school principal Mrs Trunchbull. Matilda’s sweetness mixed with her subtle sassiness is what makes her a favourite.
-
Tanner Kids – DJ, Stephanie and Michelle Tanner are three kids who became a rage through the Full House sitcom. Raised by one father and two uncles, this family was definitely not your usual everyday family. This show’s success was due to the three girls and their growing relationship with their dad and two uncles as well as amongst themselves.
-
Sabrina, the teenage witch - Imagine twitching your nose to move things or change things or even make them disappear! Of course, you had to be like Sabrina, the teenage witch to be able to do that. Oh and imagine owning a talking black cat – Salem. Both Sabrina and Salem were many teenagers’ favourite characters.
-
Aladdin and Genie- A rags to riches story about Aladdin, a street urchin who falls in love with Princess Jasmine but doesn’t know how to impress her. He finds a lamp from which out comes Genie and grants him three wishes. Jafar’s evil plans to gain possession of the Genie reveals his true side. Genie’s humour and quirk teamed with Aladdin’s simplicity and charm make them one of the best pair of friends on screen.
-
Buffy the Vampire slayer – This American TV sitcom was made popular thanks to Buffy, (played by Sarah Michele Geller), her friends and their amazing vampire slaying skills. The idea of high school kids killing vampires in the night was such a thrill!
-
Dougie Howser MD – This show either made you cringe or completely boggled your mind as 16 year old Dougie Howser underwent a series of medical treatments and suddenly became a genius and a resident surgeon at a young age. (An age where we probably didn’t know what we would do after school…)
These apart, there are many others like Dexter from Dexter’s Laboratory, Wednesday Adams from The Adams’ Family, Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a horde of other characters too. Looking back, I guess we were lucky to have some of these amazing shows.
