Grab that popcorn because it's MOVIE time!
Dear moms/dads of the world,
Whenever time permits, between my husband and me, we love to watch movies that we grew up on while growing up. Each of our parents brought us up with a balance of watching vernacular movies as well as old western classics. For me, the western classics – musicals and otherwise are my favorite and I find any excuse to play a movie from this genre.
This morning, I woke up with songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ringing in my mind, so I thought I’d put together a list of musicals that we love watching with our kids, and maybe you can watch these during your family nights too.

The King and I - Based on the 1944 novel, Anna and the King of Siam written by Margaret Landon, this musical revolves around a British school teacher. Anna, hired by King of Siam as part of an act to modernize his country.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – A British musical based on the 1964 novel by Ian Fleming. The movie is about a widowed father of two who is an eccentric inventor. The story goes on to show how each of his inventions fails until he finds himself being tipped really well at a carnival for his performance in a song-and-dance act which he crashes. He makes enough money to fix his racer car and woo his love interest, Truly Scrumptious, as well.

Sound of Music – Inspired by real-life events, The Sound of Music is a classic that every child or adult should watch. It is a story about Captain Von Trapp and his family of seven. He requests the convent to send a governess over to take care of his naughty seven children. Maria, a soon-to-be-nun is given the task by her Reverend Mother who sees she doesn’t fit in the convent. Maria and the children develop a rapport where she teaches them how to sing and while she does that, she manages to find a soft spot for the Captain too.

Mary Poppins – When the Banks family’s governess decided to quit because of their naughty children, George Banks and his wife decide to put out an ad in the paper. On hearing this, the children make a list of things that they would like the nanny to have and give to their parents. But their father tears it up and sends them back to their rooms. As the winds change, in comes Mary Poppins, and changes the lives of the children by taking them on adventures with her friend Bert. Her presence first annoys Mr. Bank’s later changes and he understands the importance of loving his family first. In other words, this movie is simply ‘supercalifragilicitexpialidocious’!

The Wizard of Oz – Dorothy runs tries to run away from home and finds herself amidst a storm that takes her and her little dog Toto, away from her home. She needs to find the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to send her back to Kansas. The story is about her journey to find him along with her newfound friends, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion while confronting and defeating the Wicked Witch of the West.

Annie – The story of a six-year-old orphan, Annie who believes that her real parents will one day come to get her. Her positivity and hopefulness lands her a weeklong stay at a conservative politician’s house. She is visited by the politician’s secretary Miss Grace to escort her back to the Warbucks estate. During her time there, Annie wins over the staff and every other person who visits the estate. She asks Grace and Mr. Warbucks to help find her real parents but her warden from the orphanage tries to scam the politician to get their hands on the reward money. Mr. Warbucks who finally accepts his love for Annie decides to adopt her!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory – The story revolves around Charlie, a young boy for whom family is everything. He finds a hidden golden ticket to visit Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory with his grandfather along with four other children and their parents. They go on an adventure as Willy Wonka takes them through the different parts of the factory during which Wonka punishes each of the naughty and badly behaved children only to bring it down to the well-behaved Charlie and his grandfather, who win the final prize.
