A great teacher inspires

A great teacher inspires

Dear Moms/dads of the world,

As you would have read in my previous posts, I wasn’t an academic but from the subjects that I had – English and Home Science were especially my favourites.  In fact it wasn’t until 8th grade that I thought any of my teachers could mentor me. Fortunately for me, that changed.

I found comfort and was able to talk to them about every little issue I faced. One taught me Home Science and the other, English. Sadly, before them, all the teachers just thought I was being lazy. These two teachers were the ones who pointed out to my parents that I was more of a ‘hands-on’ kind of a student. It’s true even today. Give me things to make or ask me to do something creative and I will give it my best. Sitting in class and listening to theory was always boring for me. I thrived on experience and that worked the best, both in college as well as in life today.

The same goes with my children. If there’s anything I’d wish for it would be for them to have great teachers like I did. The ones who hold your hand till you are ready to let go or those who help you by recognising that you just need to be taught in a slightly different way…even if it means you take an extra fifteen minutes of their time.

If not for those two teachers, I would not have been writing this post thanking those teachers who made a difference in my life, as well as those who made a difference in my children’s lives by recognising and knowing how to deal with them in class.

Because just as the American writer William Arthur Ward said, “A mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains, a superior teacher demonstrates but a great teacher inspires!”
